Pictured above is Dr. Charles Leale. Dr. Leale was the first physician to attend to Abraham Lincoln in the presidential box at Ford’s Theatre after Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th, 1865 — he had been sitting 40 feet away from the President when the attack occurred.
Leale wrote a 21-page account of his experiences. His manuscript was hand-copied by a clerk for the Surgeon General’s Office and filed in their archives; it was never made public and has remained in obscurity until a researcher working for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library came across the document very recently. The first page of the report is shown above.
